What the Orientation Year Actually Gives You
The orientation year is one of the most flexible residence permits in the Dutch immigration system.

INSIGHT: The orientation year’s most underused benefit is the reduced HSM salary threshold it unlocks. After the orientation year, you qualify for the highly skilled migrant permit at a lower salary – approximately €3,122/month gross (2026) instead of the standard €4,357–€5,942. This opens significantly more job options.
Eligibility: Who Qualifies?
Graduates of Dutch Universities
You qualify if, within the last 3 years, you completed:
- An accredited bachelor's, master's, or PhD at a recognised Dutch university or hogeschool
- A post-master programme of at least one academic year (minimum 10 months)
Graduates of Top-200 Foreign Universities
You qualify if your degree is from a university ranked in the top 200 of at least 2 of the 3 main global rankings – QS, Times Higher Education (THE), or Shanghai ARWU – in the year of your graduation.
Additional requirement: your programme must have been taught in English or Dutch, or you must hold an IELTS 6.0+ (or equivalent) certificate.
Scientific Researchers
You must deposit €4,500 into your business bank account – not a private account – and keep it there for the duration of your visa.
Proof comes from a bank statement plus an opening balance sheet from a Dutch BECON-registered accountant.
Also – The 3-Year Window
Applications must be submitted within 3 years of your graduation date or research end date.
This window does not pause – if you delay, you lose the right to apply for that qualification.
IMPORTANT: You can receive an orientation year permit more than once – but only for each separate, new degree or research programme completed after the previous orientation year expired.
What You Can Do During the Year
The orientation year permit states: Arbeid vrij toegestaan. TWV niet vereist – work freely allowed, no work permit required.
In practice this means:
Work full-time, part-time, or in multiple jobs simultaneously
Switch employers freely – no permit amendment needed
Work in any sector, any role, including below your qualification level
Register as a freelancer (ZZP) at the KVK and invoice clients
Set up a BV and begin business operations
Take internships (paid or unpaid)
Your partner and minor children who join on a dependent permit also receive unrestricted work rights during this period.
The year cannot be extended. If you reach month 12 without a qualifying follow-on permit, you must leave the Netherlands – there is no grace period.
From Orientation Year to Long-Term Stay
The orientation year is a bridge, not a destination. The permit that comes next determines how long you can stay.

Every orientation year application requires the following:
From the applicant:
Valid passport (minimum 6 months’ validity beyond the permit end date)
Diploma or official graduation confirmation from the qualifying institution
For top-200 foreign degrees: ranking evidence from at least 2 accepted publishers in the graduation year
Language test results (IELTS 6.0+ or equivalent) if the programme was not in English or Dutch
Passport-size photo meeting Dutch government standards
Criminal record declaration (antecedents certificate)
For researchers:

Residence permit history
COMMON DOCUMENT PROBLEM: Foreign diplomas from non-Dutch institutions often require additional verification – including ranking evidence, language proofs, and an official evaluation. Incomplete submissions trigger IND information requests that can add weeks to processing time.

Process Works
Applying from inside the Netherlands
If you are currently in the Netherlands on a student or research permit:
- Apply online through My IND or per post before your current permit expires
- Biometrics/residence card pick up appointment at an IND desk after approval
Applying from abroad
If you completed your degree abroad and are outside the Netherlands:
- Check whether your nationality requires a provisional residence permit (MVV)
- Apply through the Dutch embassy or consulate in your country of residence
- After IND approval, receive the MVV entry visa and travel to the Netherlands
- Register at your municipality (BRP), obtain your BSN, collect the residence card
Processing time:
The IND’s legal maximum is 90 days. In practice, complete applications often take 4–8 weeks. Missing documents are the most common cause of delays.
